Reiki

Reiki (pronounced Ray-kee) is a Japanese technique for a ‘hands on’ healing of the mind, body and spirit. The word Reiki is formed from two Japanese words; Rei which means "Universal Life" and Ki which means "life force energy.”

Speaking from my experience, I will tell you that a Reiki session can bring comfort in all areas of your body, mind and spirit. I initially sought out to have a Reiki session when I was going through a really rough time in my personal life. My intention was to ease my mind and balance my energies and restore harmony. I cannot begin to tell you the positive effects it had in my life and this was after only one treatment!  It was then that I knew that I had to be a part of this Energy Healing practice on a deeper level.  I wanted to know everything about it and be able to help others with the use of Reiki, as it had helped me. I am proud to say that I am now a certified Reiki Master.

Reiki is not associated with any religion although; it may be seen as a spiritual practice.  It promotes relaxation, wellness and security and can help ease imbalances, stress and tension. When a person is free of these imbalances and tension the body and mind are able to create a healthier environment within, promoting healing on all levels; physical, mental and emotional. Reiki is completely non-invasive without any negative side-effects and can never be mis-used. It’s a risk-free treatment.

A typical Reiki session lasts from 45 – 60 minutes.  During this time the client will lay down, fully clothed, with eyes closed while soft relaxing meditational music plays in the background, just as if you were at an appointment for a massage.  During the session the Reiki practitioner will either hold their hands a few inches away or softly lay their hands directly on the client (depending on client preference) for approximately 3-5 minutes in each specific area, balancing the energies of the body, starting at the crown of the head and working down to their feet. Universal Life Energy will be channeled through the Practitioners hands to the body of the client. Setting the intention to create relaxation, assist in any necessary healing and to help reduce pain and other symptoms the client may be experiencing. If the client has an area that is not touched by the Reiki practitioner, please know that Reiki Energy will go to wherever it is needed in the body.  If the client does have any concerns in particular that they’ve expressed, the Reiki practitioner may spend more time in this area and will intuitively know when they should move on to the next area.  Before the end of the session the Reiki Practitioner will then slowly sweep over the body with their hands removing any residual negative energy and cleanse the aura.

Just the other day I heard a good analogy that I thought I would share.  It may help people understand what the Reiki Practitioner role is in the Reiki session. Think of the relationship between a car and the gas pump.   A car needs fuel in order to work properly.  When your car is running low on fuel, you take it to the gas station and fill it back up with fuel. It is the fuel that goes into your car and fills up the tank.  The way you get that fuel into your tank is through the fuel pump.  Think of your body, mind and spirit as the car.  We are running ourselves down with stress about money, jobs, relationships and a ton of other things we have going on in our lives. If you’re not taking care to refuel yourself on a daily basis by meditating or practicing some other form of self-care you are going to run low on fuel (energy).  Our bodies are made of energy and when you deplete your body of this energy, you wear down your immune system. If your mind, body and spirit are not strong and balanced, you open yourself up to dis-ease of your mind, body and spirit.  When you receive a Reiki treatment, you are being refueled of vital energy. It’s important to keep in mind that the Reiki Practitioner is not healing you. They are not the fuel/Energy. You are healing yourself and the Reiki Practitioner is simply a conduit of the Energy; the fuel pump if you will.  :)

Reiki is becoming more and more accepted in the field of Western Medicine. Over 800 hospitals across the country offer Reiki treatments to patients. After witnessing the positive results and benefits of Reiki in hospitals, that number is growing.  The ever-popular Dr. Oz has even expressed his support of the power of Reiki to be a very beneficial treatment in Alternative Medicine.

I encourage anyone who feels unbalanced in mind, spirit or body to research Reiki and experience it for yourself.  You have nothing to lose and only positive Reiki energy to gain.
